My herd is basically traditional colors but I do get some occasional colors, like solid red Cinnamon
(granddam to Vindacator).
As does are the backbone of any breeding program, I try to keep structurally
correct does--that can function in a group, do well in a semi-pasture condition, are easy breeders, great
mothers, and have a consistent body type. Correctness of type is a must if you want these qualities passed
down to offspring. Things like bad bites, loose shoulders, extreme sickle or cow hocks can become ingrained
into a line, making it difficult to get it turned around. Temperament is an important factor in a good
doe...I don't keep does who beat up on other goats, don't take care of their babies, or are uncatchable.
I also cull for does that are "hard" keepers, or have breeding or milking problems.
Does have to be correct in structure---correct on their feet and legs, good top. Good tight udders
are a must. Mothering ability and ability to carry/birth kids are "musts" as well. |
